Architectural Emergency Lighting

At Béhar, we’ve been pioneering elegant and eco-designed emergency lighting made in France. We create luminaires that combine safety and aesthetics to ensure safe building evacuation while preserving architectural integrity.

Made in France

We design, develop and manufacture disruptive and eco-conscious exit signs, escape routes and anti-panic luminaires in France.

Our steel, wood, and screen-printed pictograms are manufactured and assembled in Île-de-France.

As part of the Schneider Electric group, our electronic boards and plastic housings are manufactured in Italy, in our factory located near Bologna.

These strategic production locations help us to reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining a responsive supply chain and optimized delivery times.

Design that fits every architecture

Since 1960, we’ve been developing functional design that gives architects and project teams beautiful and flexible solutions that blend seamlessly into any building’s architecture. Materials, shapes, colors, mounting options, fixing accessories: our products can be customized to meet any requirement.

In 1960, Alfred Béhar was just 22 when he established Béhar Sécurité to design and manufacture France’s first architectural emergency lighting. Recognizing the limitations of standard industrial products focused only on regulatory compliance, he envisioned something better: architectural emergency lighting. Collaborating closely with architects, he developed evacuation light fixtures featuring refined design and premium materials that enhance rather than compromise building aesthetics.

Innovation

A trailblazer, Alfred Béhar invented the first self-contained safety unit (BAES), for which he registered a patent in 1960.Alfred Béhar was a true innovator who shaped industry standards. In 1974, emergency lighting became regulated in France, imposing specific standards to ensure the evacuation of people. From then on, requests poured in, and Alfred Béhar’s imagination was bursting at the seams. In 1985, he designed and produced the first edge-mounted emergency lighting unit for the headquarters of the Canal + television channel, represented by the Spark series. To celebrate the model’s 40th anniversary, we have launched a redesigned version featuring a square pictogram: LUCE, the most compact light fixture available today.

Schneider Electric

In 2006, Schneider Electric – the global leader in electrical equipment and energy management – integrated Béhar Sécurité into its portfolio. This partnership enables us to control local regulations and deliver our solutions worldwide.

Eco-responsibility

Our luminaires are engineering with optimized component counts and simplified assembly processes, facilitating repair and reconditioning. We maintain a comprehensive spare parts inventory for all our models. For products with older technologies, we provide upgrade kits that preserve existing supports and pictograms. Our emergency light fixtures are designed to meet both current requirements and future challenges.
